Parent Coaching with a Developmental Approach
Lisa Weiner is a nurse practitioner, parent educator and consultant, and owner of Handmade Parenting. She provides both group and one on one education and parent coaching to help parents and teachers better understand children using a attachment-based developmental approach. Lisa believes that while the parent is the expert on their own child, she can be a source of support and insight to to help deepen the parent-child relationship.
When Lisa needed some updated images for her website and social media, we worked together to plan a personal branding session that would show her warmth and compassion, incorporate elements of her branding, and provide a glimpse of what she does when she is not coaching families. The day began at Tea Chai Té, Lisa’s favorite local tea shop, and ‘office’ away from home. A short stroll took us to her family’s home, where I continued to photograph her with her family. Lisa, and her family worked together seamlessly in their light-filled kitchen to whip up a banana cake so fast I hardly knew what was happening! Learn more about Lisa below, on her website, and be sure to visit her on Facebook as well for information on her upcoming group classes.
What ignited the spark in you to start your business?
Being a mother is the greatest joy in my life. When my boys were young they had a wonderful early-childhood teacher who inspired my mothering and inspired me to learn more about parenting and child development. I began studying with Kim Payne and Davina Muse and became a certified Simplicity Parenting counselor. Handmade Parenting began when I wanted to share Simplicity Parenting with parents through classes and one-on-one parent consulting. Several years ago I began my studies at The Neufeld Institute where I am now a student in the facilitator training program. When I began to learn about Dr. Gordon Neufeld’s attachment-based developmental paradigm I felt that I had “come home.” The approach is so rich, resonant, compassionate, hopeful and widely applicable; I absolutely love sharing this approach with parents through classes (such as Making Sense of Adolescence, Understanding Resistance and Opposition and Making Sense of Anxiety) and private parent consulting sessions. I am honored to be the only Neufeld trained parent consultant in Portland.
What is unique about your business?
I work from a developmental approach whereas most parenting “techniques” come at things from a behavioral perspective. I also deeply believe that each parent and teacher is their child’s “best bet”; my goal through parent coaching is to get them back into the driver’s seat with their children and students.
