How To Get Your Best Family Portraits
A family portrait is more than just another picture. It is a time to capture and celebrate your unique family’s story at this moment in time and turn it into family art that will be treasured for generations. As a family photographer, I provide a custom guided photography experience because your ultimate enjoyment of your family portraits is a combination of many factors. Choice of location, what you wear, the quality of the final product, as well as your overall experience all contribute to your enjoyment and emotional connection to your family’s art. I want nothing more than to help you get your best family portraits.
Wardrobe. The clothes we wear affect the way we see ourselves. They help us to be seen in the light that we wish to be, and also convey our personalities. When choosing clothing for a session, the goal is to show each individual’s personality, while creating a cohesive look. Colors can evoke feelings, some photograph better than others, and layers and textures add visual interest. With a little planning, your family can look coordinated, but not matching, while still allowing each individual personality to shine through.
Location. Does your family like to hike, spend time by the water, or explore the city? The location of your session becomes the backdrop to the story you are telling. Light and time of day also have a huge impact and can change the entire mood of a portrait.
Experience. Your own experience and mood leading up to the session have a huge impact of your emotional connection to your final images. When you see your family’s portrait hanging on the wall, do you want to have memories of the stress of last minute clothing changes, and frustration with your children for not smiling at the camera. Or would you prefer to recall the fun you had playing and laughing together as your photographer guided your family to relax and be themselves, so you could just concentrate on being with your family? By preparing for the session with intention, a portrait session can be a fun family activity and not a chore!
As a family photographer, I believe…
You are not the same as the three families before you in line at the same location being photographed with the same props. Your family, and everyone in it is, unique and wonderful in their own way!
When planning a family session, my goal is to first learn about your family and what you are hoping to capture during our time together. Then, we will work together to plan the little details that will all come together to tell the story of your family. On the day of your session, your family can relax and have fun together as I gently guide your interactions, revealing each individual’s essence and leading to moments of natural connection that I can capture for you.
With this intentional approach, we will start with the end in mind to create the best family portraits possible!
